Fact of life: Walking into a spider web can make the calmest, most graceful person into an arm- flailing nutball without any warning. When you're the one watching, it can be extremely entertaining. On the other hand, when you become the arm- flailing nutball, it is one of those terrifying "I'm gonna die!" moments. (Like leaning back in your chair just a little too far.) My second instinct when this happens, (after that whole arm flailing thing.) is to find the spider, freak out a little more, then make whoever is with me get it off. It's a routine.
Me and my brother Tanner used to make frequent trips down through our woods to a creek and an old cabin. After about my tenth time getting stuck in a web, I finally learned that since I was and am a hobbit, if I walked exactly where he did, I never got attacked by the sticky mess left behind by something with way too many legs. Forcing Tanner to run into all of the spider webs for me provided entertainment, that's for sure. The other day, though, I started thinking.
We can take each trial in our life and look at it like a spider web. At first, it seems terrible, unavoidable, and like there is no way out. Something happens, we run into a web, and then we obsess and freak out. After calming down a little, we begin to search for the source of the problem, we look for the spider that is conveniently hiding out on our shoulder. When it is found, there is more upset. Then we seek help in fixing the problem and flicking that spider off of our shoulders. After the problem is solved, things settle down and you try your best to get rid of those last traces of web/ problem are gone from our clothes/ thoughts.
Both kinds of webs are avoidable, though. In the woods, follow someone tall. An easy task when you are 5' 1". In life, follow Christ. This one is not so easy purely because of how stubborn we are as humans. Sometimes it can be hard to tell where Christ is calling us, and at other times we just refuse to listen. In these instances, we land ourselves in spider webs caused by disobedience. Because we are human we can never avoid every web that tries to catch us, but if we faithfully follow God, He will lead us out of the way of the majority of them.
As a Christian, I am called to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. Jesus was human, just like me. He was tempted and tried, he went through everything I go through and much more, unlike me, though, he handled things perfectly. His Father through Him kept Him calm, gave Him wisdom and helped Him through everything. Jesus followed what God said faithfully. He didn't question God's plan and I shouldn't either. "And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 18:3
